What exactly does “animal welfare” mean in France, where the Civil Code lists animals under the category “owned property”? This was the topic of discussion among the prestigious participants in the “Animals and Us” symposium held in Paris on February 7, 2014. Organized by Ecolo-Ethik, it was held at the French Senate, with mediation by Matthieu Ricard, Boris Cyrulnik, and Yves Coppens.
Ecolo-Ethik is a think tank for environmentally responsible innovation co-directed by Senator Chantal Jouanno and Judge Laurence Vichnievsky. Ecolo-Ethik is currently working on a proposal for legislature recognizing the importance of animals in French society. This initiative is also intended to boost EU animal welfare schemes.
